INCREASING LGBT+ VISIBILITY IN THE EARTH & LIFE SCIENCES

Rainbow eucalyptus (Eucalyptus degulpta)

Welcome to OUTreach at UCSB!

Scientists pride themselves on their clinical, unbiased, and apolitical pursuit of the truth. Unfortunately, this approach often suppresses important discussions of sexual and gender identity, leaving many developing scientists to feel unwelcome or unsure in science. We aim to address this problem by increasing LGBTQ+ visibility and representation in the sciences through the creation of an inclusive space that regularly highlights the research of LGBTQ+ graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty in the earth and life sciences. By recognizing and promoting the achievements of LGBTQ+ scientists at UCSB, we hope to confirm for LGBTQ+ undergraduates that a career in science is not only possible for, but welcoming to all sexual and gender identities.

Our logo represents our mascot, the rainbow eucalyptus (Eucalyptus degulpta). As the bark of the rainbow eucalyptus ages, it darkens from a bright yellow to shades of green, blue, orange, and finally red. Because the bark peels patchily throughout the year, the result is a rainbow streaked trunk. While eucalyptus abound in Santa Barbara, you'll have to travel to Melanesia to find this beauty.
